Meet Laurie Caouette: Helping Rural Ontario Communities Thrive

MRA’s Newest Economic and Development Advisor

At the Ministry of Rural Affairs (MRA), our Economic and Business Advisors play an important role in supporting the growth and resilience of Ontario’s rural communities. We are excited to introduce Laurie Caouette, who recently joined MRA as the Economic and Business Advisor for eastern Ontario. Laurie supports communities across Northumberland, Hastings, Prince Edward, Lennox & Addington, Frontenac, and Renfrew counties.

A Passion for Rural Development

Laurie brings a rich and diverse background to her role. After graduating with a diploma in print journalism, she spent over 15 years as a reporter covering stories in eastern Ontario. In 2010, she launched a small business in Brighton, Ontario, which sparked her transition into municipal economic development. Her leadership in Brighton’s downtown revitalization project marked the beginning of a decade-long journey in supporting rural communities.

Before joining MRA, Laurie held various municipal roles in Brighton, Hastings County, and Quinte West, focusing on economic development, grant writing, special events, and community engagement. Most recently, she worked at Loyalist College as an Industry Partnership Officer, where she facilitated collaborations between academia and industry to drive research, corporate training, and experiential learning. We asked Laurie a few questions about herself and here are some highlights:

Current Projects and Initiatives

Laurie is currently wrapping up a First Impressions Community Exchange project between the Town of Cobourg and the City of Brockville. She’s also working with the Municipality of Cramahe to deliver a Community Economic Development 101 workshop in March 2026.

Looking ahead, Laurie will support another First Impressions Community Exchange between the City of Quinte West and the Town of Stouffville in 2026.

Why Laurie Loves Her Work

Having lived most of her life in rural Ontario, Laurie values the lifestyle and sense of belonging that these communities offer.

“It is extremely gratifying to know that my work contributes to creating thriving communities, so that future generations have the choice to stay and grow in rural Ontario.”

How Laurie Supports Her Clients
