Strengthening Ontario’s Rural Economies Through Agriculture
Agriculture plays a central role in Ontario’s rural economy – driving jobs, investment, and vibrant communities. By building agriculture economic development capacity, communities can better adapt to change, support local businesses and strengthen long-term resilience.
To help municipalities, economic development professionals and community partners make the most of these opportunities, the Ministry of Rural Affairs offers Agriculture Economic Development (AED) training. Based on the Agriculture Economic Development guide, AED is designed specifically for rural Ontario.
What AED training provides
Based on the Agriculture Economic Development guide, the AED Training gives participants practical tools and knowledge needed to grow and support the local agri-food sector. Through real-world examples, hands-on exercises, and Ontario-specific data, participants learn how to:
- Understand and assess local agricultural assets
- Identify opportunities for value-added agriculture and farm diversification
- Support agri-food businesses, agritourism, and related supply chains
- Build effective partnerships with producers, processors, and industry
- Connect agriculture to broader economic development goals such as tourism, workforce development, innovation, and community resilience
The AED training is ideal for economic development officers, municipal planners, community development staff and organizations working with agriculture and agri-food businesses.
AED training dates
Part One: April 15, 2026 from 10 to 11:30 a.m.
Part Two: April 29, 2026 from 10 to 11:30 a.m.
